Sunny Isles Beach is a city located on a barrier island, bounded by the Atlantic Ocean on the east and the Intracoastal Waterway on the west. This is a growing resort area with shops, high-rise hotels and condominiums lining Collins Avenue. It is centrally located just minutes from Bal Harbour to the south, and Aventura to the north and west.
In 1920, Harvey Baker Graves, a private investor, purchased a 2.26-square-mile area of land for development as a tourist resort. He named it Sunny Isles — The Venice of America. It was later renamed Sunny Isles Beach in 1997, the citizens of the area voted to incorporate as a municipality.
The Haulover bridge was finished in 1925 and created accessibility from Miami Beach which attracted further development of the neighborhood.
The popular Sunny Isles Pier is a designated a historic site. It sustained damage from Hurricane Wilma in 2005 at which time it was remodeled and reopened as Newport Fishing Pier.
The first single-family homes were built in the coveted Golden Shores area in the 1950s and the area began to take off as a vacation destination.
